Right click the icon for the BlackBerry and choose Open (or double-click on the Desktop icon and open the drive (see Figure 5-5). You can explore your BlackBerry as you would any drive. What the compiler is doing here could be called sleight of handle, if you ll pardon the expression. The actual IL code emitted with stack semantics and heap semantics doesn t differ much from the perspective of the runtime, you are manipulating a reference to a heap object in both cases. What is different is the syntax you use and, critically, the execution of the destructor at the end of the function. To sum up, the heapallocated object is immediately deleted at the end of the block, rather than lazily garbage collected, and, as a consequence, the destructor is called immediately upon deletion.

As you can see, any query using literal values gets the right answer assuming you are prepared to accept 1 as an appropriate answer from the optimizer when our understanding lets us know that there really is no data.

As a general rule, the optimizer doesn t allow 0 to propagate through a cardinality calculation. Whenever the computed cardinality is 0, the optimizer plays safe, and introduces a cardinality of 1. There is at least one special exception to this rule. In the case where a predicate is a logical contradiction such as 1 = 0, the obvious zero cardinality is accepted. Often, these predicates are internally generated predicates that allow the optimizer to prune entire branches of execution plans at run time.
