With tracking references, we could have returned a handle as a parameter rather than using the return value. Since a function can only have one return value, this is useful. In classic C++, you might have used a double indirection to accomplish the same thing. The code in Listing 4-12 shows the use of a tracking reference to a handle, which allows the handle to be set in the function and retain its new value outside the function. Listing 4-12. Without the tracking reference, you could change the object in the function and have those changes preserved, but you would not be able to make the handle reference a different object entirely or assign it to a newly created object.

In classic C++, you dereference a pointer using the * operator. The same is true of handles in C++/CLI. Subsequent assignment to a variable without a handle will result in a copy being made. Dereferenced handles may be assigned to tracking references without a copy being made. If a copy is made, there must be a copy constructor defined. Remember that copy constructors are not defined automatically for reference types as they are for native types. Listing 4-14 shows the basic syntax. Listing 4-14. On most handhelds, when you want to put in the @ or the . in your e-mail message, you need a complicated series of commands usually a Shift or Alt. On the BlackBerry, you don t need to take those extra steps. While you are typing the email address, after the user name (e.g., martin) just press the Space key once and the BlackBerry will automatically insert the @ martin@ . Type the domain name, press the Space key again, and presto the BlackBerry automatically puts in the . in martin@madesimplelearning. No additional keystrokes are necessary. Just finish the e-mail address with the com in martin@madesimplelearning.com .

Another thing that the Space key does is to move you down to the next item in a list. In the Minutes field, pressing the Space key will jump to the next 15 minutes. In the Hour field, you jump to the next hour. And similarly, in the Month field, you jump to the next month. In any other type of field, pressing the Space key will jump you to the next entry. Give it a try. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Click your Calendar icon. Open a new calendar event by clicking the trackpad anywhere in the Day view. Glide down to the month and press the Space key notice you advance one month. Glide over to the hour and press Space notice you advance 1 hour. Finally, glide to the minutes and press Space. Notice that you move 15 minutes forward. These are all great tricks to quickly re-schedule calendar events.
